PETALING JAYA:
A list of complaints against police higher-ups, purportedly from lower ranks, is being circulated on social media, urging the Prime Minister, Dr Mahathir Mohamad to spare some attention to their grouses.

The list has been shared on WhatsApp and was also posted to a Facebook group devoted to Muhyiddin Yassin, deputy president of PPBM, and newly-appointed home minister.

Muhyiddin has promised to look into the setting up of an Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission which would receive and hear complaints from the public, as recommended by a royal inquiry in 2005. The proposed IPCMC was shelved after opposition from the police and others.

The list of complaints was posted earlier today by a Facebook account under the name “Kamal Rahman”, whose personal profile on Facebook listed him as working for Tourism Malaysia in Penang. FMT has been unable to contact him to confirm the posting or his personal details.

The 10-point posting lists complaints such as corruption among senior officers, favoritism and racism in promotions and misuse of allocations

It alleged that top officers, including the Inspector-General of Police, the Deputy IGP, divisional directors and senior officers above contingent level, were more concerned with apple-polishing than carrying out their obligations.

It said senior officers should be investigated for personal wealth and their property holdings.

Other complaints included one that junior ranks were made to contribute to fancy farewell receptions for senior officers; of allocations for the police force being misused resulting in unserviceable equipment; and lower ranks being passed over for recognition.

The posting urged the prime minister to look into the police force, being an important security agency, as part of his pledge to carry out institutional reforms.
