KUALA LUMPUR:
Police say a total of RM114 million was found in 35 of the 72 bags that were taken away from the Pavilion Residences condominium in Kuala Lumpur linked to former prime minister Najib Razak.

The 37 other bags contain jewellery and other valuable items, and police are still getting experts to evaluate the items.

Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Department chief Amar Singh said 11 machines had been used in the counting process.

Police earlier announced that 72 bags and 284 boxes containing luxury handbags were seized during their operations, as part of an investigation into the 1MDB scandal.

When asked where the seized cash was being kept, Amar said it was now in a safe in Bank Negara Malaysia.

Meanwhile, the police are keeping the luxury goods and jewellery at an undisclosed location.

Amar said searches were conducted at 12 premises, all of which were related to the police’s probe into 1MDB.

In the first media conference to explain the raids today, Amar also dismissed pictures posted on social media purportedly showing seized goods and cash from Najib as false.

“All this is fake news. I have instructed police officers that they were not allowed to bring their mobile phones during their operations.

“There were no pictures taken during all our raids, other than by the official photographer.

“As such, these pictures are false. I appeal to the media not to spread such images as it would jeopardise our investigations,” he said.

Shoes seized from daughter

Amar said the confiscated bags and items were from two units in Pavilion Residences which belong to Najib’s children. Another other unit is unoccupied.

He said police also confiscated several pairs of shoes from a unit occupied by Najib’s daughter.

“A hundred and fifty handbags were taken from Najib’s daughter’s place, some in boxes and some opened,” he added.

Amar said pictures of the seized luxury items such as handbags and watches would be sent to experts abroad, including in Paris, for authentication purposes.

“There are many brands, but most of them are from Paris,” he said.

He said once the police could authenticate the gold items seized, they would provide further details.

He also defended the police searches of the properties linked to Najib.

“We have all the powers under Chapter 13 under the Criminal Procedure Code, in addition to the search warrant,” he said.

Amar said police had so far recorded 30 statements and would continue to record more.

He also said statements would be taken from Najib’s son and daughter.

“We can return goods like the baby clothes once evidence is shown that the items were bought with their money,” he added.

He also confirmed that the investigation was being conducted under the money laundering act.
