Palace says Azmin still MB pending replacement candidates

The sultan awaits a list of candidates from the Selangor MB.

PETALING JAYA:
The Selangor palace today confirmed that Mohamed Azmin Ali has accepted a federal Cabinet post, but says he will remain the menteri besar until a list of candidates for his replacement is provided to the sultan for consideration.

A statement by the Selangor Sultan’s private secretary, Mohamad Munir Bani, said Azmin would only be released from his state duties after the ruler names the new menteri besar.

Azmin, who is also the PKR deputy president, was named by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the minister of economic affairs.

On Saturday, a senior PKR leader said three assemblymen were considered the top choices to take over as menteri besar: Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei (Sungai Kandis), Amirudin Shari (Sungai Tua) Dr Idris Ahmad (Ijok).

Amirudin and Shuhaimi are widely seen as close allies of Azmin.

Amirudin is the state executive councillor for Youth Development, Sports, Cultural and Entrepreneurship, while Shuhaimi is Azmin’s political secretary.

Idris, meanwhile, had been considered a potential menteri besar candidate during the Kajang Move crisis when PKR sought to replace Khalid Ibrahim as menteri besar.
