GEORGE TOWN:
Finance Minister-designate Lim Guan Eng believes there will be no overlap of functions between the Finance Ministry and the Economic Affairs Ministry, a new portfolio in the Cabinet of Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Lim said the Economic Affairs Ministry would focus on matters of economic policy while the Finance Ministry would assume its traditional role in managing the country’s finances.

“MoF will operate MoF, it is business as usual. The economy ministry would be similar to the Economic Planning Unit in the Prime Minister’s Department, previously,” he said today.

Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali, who has been nominated as the Economic Affairs Minister, has yet to decide whether to relinquish his role as head of the state government or take up the Cabinet offer.

He was in audience for two hours this morning with the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah. The Selangor palace will issue a statement on his position tomorrow morning.

Dr Mahathir’s 15-member Cabinet are due to take their oaths of office before the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at Istana Negara tomorrow afternoon.
