5,000 turn up to greet Anwar at Padang Timur, PJ

Thousands of people turned up to greet PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim at the Padang Timur here tonight.

Anwar was earlier today freed from prison, where he was a serving a five-year sentence, after being given a full pardon by the King.

PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar hailed her father as a symbol of freedom for the people.

“This is a new era for Malaysia, where the people are with a new government. We are in this together.”

PKR Youth Chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said the Pakatan Harapan government now had a big responsibility to implement Reformasi now that they held power at the federal level.

“Last week, we freed Malaysia from BN, today we freed Anwar Ibrahim from prison.

“We have proven that people have power,” he told the boisterous crowd of about 5,000.

PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim and his wife, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, were swarmed by supporters upon arriving at Padang Timur tonight.

“The people have high expectations, and with the combination of Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Anwar, our country can return to greatnesss.”

PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli called on Pakatan Harapan leaders to care for the Barisan Nasional and PAS as they formed the opposition in the country.

“For years, we were in the opposition, now we are in the government. We know how difficult it is to be in the opposition.”

He said BN and PAS had an important role to play.

“To my friends in BN and PAS, you have a duty to make sure the wellbeing of the people is protected.

“TV3, RTM, Utusan, please be fair to Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional and PAS.”

Other leaders present were DAP secretary-general and Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng, Amanah chief and Defence Minister Mat Sabu and PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution.

Mahathir, who is chairman of Pakatan Harapan, was sworn in as the 8th prime minister after the May 9 general election which saw Barisan Nasional losing its power after six decades.
