PETALING JAYA:
A PKR MP has come to the defence of party vice-president Rafizi Ramli, saying that unlike in Barisan Nasional (BN), Pakatan Harapan (PH) members should be able to voice their opinions openly.

Wangsa Maju MP Tan Yee Kew said this was a new government and the old ways of remaining silent should not be continued.

“That does not mean there is a rift in PH. Far from it.

“The party does not wish to be like BN where everything looked good from the outside but not from the inside. We should not portray that.

“We should be able to have a good relationship from the inside and the outside,” she told FMT when asked about a possible rift following Rafizi’s outburst over the announcement of three Cabinet positions.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had appointed DAP’s Lim Guan Eng as finance minister, Amanah’s Mohamad Sabu as defence minister and PPBM’s Muhyiddin Yassin as home minister.

Rafizi later claimed that Mahathir had bulldozed through the appointments.

Tan said there was no rift between PH members as Rafizi was just voicing his opinion that the three appointments were made without PKR’s consent. She added that it was healthy to maintain checks and balances in PH, whose main objective was to take the country forward.

Tan, who won the Wangsa Maju seat with a majority of more than 24,000 votes, said claims of a rift among party members was wrong.

Referring to screenshots she had seen on WhatsApp chats of people talking of a division between party members, including Rafizi and Nurul Izzah Anwar, she said these were “fakes”.

“I am always with them. They have a good working relationship. These messages are most vicious with malicious intent to split PH,” she said.

She also quashed rumours that PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail was unhappy with the appointment of a Chinese as finance minister. “There is no truth in that. They are trying to destroy the new government,” she said.

Tan was referring to news reports stating that Wan Azizah was unhappy over the appointment of Lim as the finance minister and that she had said the post should not be given to a Chinese.
