“For too long, certain BN leaders in Sarawak have acted with impunity as if they were lords and masters over the land. The reign of the ‘untouchables’ is over”, said Francis Paul Siah, leader of the Movement for Change, Sarawak.
He urged the incoming Pakatan Harapan federal government to revamp the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission into an independent and fearless agency with “teeth”.
“Those who abuse their powers to enrich themselves and their families must not be allowed to escape,” he said. “Sarawakians expect the PH government to clean up the mess created by greedy and corrupt BN leaders, past or present. We expect nothing less.”
He congratulated Sarawak PH chairman Chong Chieng Jen’s stand last night against accepting any component of the Sarawak BN parties, including the ruling PBB, into the state chapter of Pakatan Harapan.
Siah said that Sarawak BN leaders would now have to think twice about doing things their way, such as cutting deals for their cronies and awarding large tracts of prime land to themselves.
He also commented on a reported meeting between Sarawak governor Abdul Taib Mahmud and newly-appointed prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
He said that Taib, as governor, had no business to meddle in politics and had brought the office of the governor into disrepute if it was true that he had discussed Sarawak politics with Mahathir.
