ALOR SETAR:
Newly elected Sungai Tiang assemblywoman Suraya Yaacob today denied she was leaving Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN).

Suraya said a picture that has gone viral of her in a meeting together with new Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir was actually taken at a meeting that happened in 2015, when Mukhriz led the state under the then BN government.

She added there had been no such meeting after GE14.

Mukhriz took his oath of office before Kedah Sultan Tunku Sallehuddin Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah in a ceremony at Istana Anak Bukit today.

In a Facebook post, Suraya said BN had accepted the fact it lost in the election.

“I wish to stress again that I am staying loyal to Umno and BN, now and forever.

“The act of slandering and spreading false news is clearly a big sin in Islam, against the law and immoral,” she said.

Speculation has been rife that Suraya, together with another assemblywoman Norsabrina Mohd Noor, would jump ship to Pakatan Harapan (PH).

This would enable the pact to form the state government with a simple majority of 19 seats.

PH had secured 18 out of the 36 state seats in the May 9 election, with PAS winning 15 and BN three.
