“There was nothing hidden, and I did not act based on anyone’s directive or even agenda,” he said today, according to Berita Harian. All decisions on the 1MDB investigation were based on facts, in compliance with set procedures and provisions of the law.
Earlier today, Mahathir named Apandi as being among top government officers who would be investigated for any evidence of wrongdoing.
At a press conference in Putrajaya, he had said that Apandi might have undermined his own credibility by hiding evidence in the 1MDB case, and that the government would consult lawyers on the matter. (Under the constitution, the attorney-general is the government’s chief legal adviser.)
Apandi said that his actions were clear and there was no cover-up.
“What is important is that regulations and legal provisions should be upheld, and any action already undertaken or to be undertaken by anyone must be based on the law,” he said.
Last year, Apandi had cleared prime minister Najib Razak of any offences pertaining to financial transactions of RM2.6 billion and RM42 million in his personal bank accounts which were said to be linked to 1MDB funds.
