Buoyed by Malay support, Perak Amanah chief sees chance to wrest Manjoi

Asmuni Awi feels there will be a Malay tsunami towards PH not only in his constituency but also nationwide.

PETALING JAYA:
Perak Amanah chairman Asmuni Awi, who is contesting the Manjoi state seat, hopes to be second time lucky.

“I lost by 132 votes in 2013 when I stood under the PAS ticket against the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate,” he said.

This time around, the Ipoh-based lawyer said the reception from voters, especially the Malays, was inspiring.

“I feel there is going to be a Malay tsunami, not only in my constituency but also nationwide. I am saying this based on my experience and feedback from other opposition candidates elsewhere,” he told FMT in a telephone interview.

Asmuni said even the Indians were warming to the Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) campaign in Manjoi, one of the two seats under the Tambun parliamentary seat.

Amanah is one of the four opposition parties in PH but all the coalition’s candidates are using the PKR symbol as their common logo in the election.

Asmuni said he and his campaign workers preferred to meet voters face-to-face and hold meetings in small groups.

“We also visit pasar tani and pasar malam to distribute and explain the contents of the PH manifesto to the public,” said Asmuni who left PAS in 2015.

Asmuni said the people were also aware that PH was gunning to capture the Perak and federal governments.

“Voters yearn for change as the goods and services tax has burdened them and the prices of essential items have gone up,” he said.

Asmuni is facing BN incumbent Mohamed Ziad Zainal Abidin and PAS’ Mohd Hafez Sabri.

Manjoi has 57,817 voters, with Malays making up 73%, Chinese 17% and Indians 10%.
