Roll out Plan B if Tian Chua barred from polls, says Wong Chen

He says a clean independent candidate is needed to represent the Batu incumbent.

PETALING JAYA:
With Batu incumbent Tian Chua’s action against the Election Commission’s (EC) rejection of his nomination form pending in court, PKR’s Wong Chen says there must be a backup plan in the event that the legal challenge fails.

Speaking to FMT, Wong said he hoped Tian Chua would be able to contest in Batu but that a “Plan B” should otherwise be immediately put in place.

“Have a Plan B where an independent candidate qualifies and meets the criteria as a clean and decent candidate,” the Subang incumbent said.

He added that time was of the essence as the polls are just six days away.

Pakatan Harapan chief secretary Saifuddin Abdullah meanwhile said supporting an independent candidate might be the best move for Tian Chua.

“That is the only thing Tian Chua will be able to do for now (if the court does not favour him),” he said.

The EC today sought to block Tian Chua from taking legal action over the rejection of his nomination papers to contest the Batu parliamentary seat in the coming election.

Government lawyer Amarjeet Singh said the PKR vice-president must file an election petition after the general election, as provided for under Article 118 of the Federal Constitution.

However, Tian Chua’s lawyer Gurdial Singh Nijar said the case laws cited by Amarjeet were related to challenging election results.

“We are only questioning the legal status of Tian Chua,” he said

The judge will deliver his ruling tomorrow on whether Tian Chua is qualified to contest.

Yesterday, one of the two independent candidates contesting for the Batu federal constituency told FMT he was offering himself to represent PKR.

P Prabakaran, who at 22 is the youngest candidate in the coming polls, said he always respected and looked up to Tian Chua as his mentor.

Tian Chua himself has said he will endorse any of the three non-Barisan National candidates contesting the seat if his court appeal is rejected.
