Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Mansor made the announcement today, Bernama reported.
The dissident 16 had said that the party had breached its constitution in being granted an extension of time until next year to hold party elections. They said they had been deprived of their right to choose their leaders.
They contended that Umno should hold elections every three years and the elections must be held within 54 months, after an extension of time. The last elections were held in October 2013.
Yesterday, one of the 16, Salihudin Ahmad Khalid, of Seri Merpati Pandan Indah branch, was quoted as saying that Umno should be fair and also take action against Supreme Council members who had breached the party constitution by postponing the party elections.
Salihudin and the others, Umno members from different states, named as respondents Umno executive secretary Ab Rauf Yusoh and the Registrar of Societies.
The suit was brought after former minister Rais Yatim publicly questioned Umno’s validity. He had advised the supreme council members to seek a court order.
