PETALING JAYA:
Malaysians can join the battle against human trafficking and smuggling of migrants with the launch of an app for smartphones.

The app, Be My Protector, is available for Apple and Android devices, and allows users to anonymously report cases of human trafficking, labour violations and child exploitation to case workers of Tenaganita, an anti-human trafficking organisation.

Tenaganita said human trafficking was “a scourge that is pervasive in Malaysian society” in the form of sex trafficking, exploitation of domestic workers, forced labour, bonded labour, mail-order brides and child brides.

The app is part of the Be My Protector campaign launched in 2015 and conducted mainly through the social media.

The Malaysian government has announced its intention to be categorised as a Tier 1 nation, in the US State Department’s Trafficking in Persons Report. Six courts are being set up to deal with human trafficking cases.
