Rizalman Mokhtar, head of Umno Bandar Tun Razak, denied that Umno was allowing MCA to contest the seat. The two parties are also in contention over Wangsa Maju.
A report in the Sin Chew Daily yesterday quoted the MCA divisional leader, Chew Yin Keen, speaking of “an initial agreement” with Umno.
Also yesterday, a group of Chinese residents in the area called for an Umno candidate, saying they would reject the MCA.
Rizalman told FMT today: “Whatever Chew said to the Chinese press, I do not know.” He denied that any agreement had been reached between the two Barisan Nasional component parties.
FMT was not able to obtain a response from Chew.
Former Selangor menteri besar Khalid Ibrahim was elected as MP of Bandar Tun Razak on a PKR ticket in 2013. He has said he would make way for younger candidates and not seek reelection, despite receiving “offers” from several parties to represent them.
Khalid was dismissed from PKR in 2014 after he refused to step down as Selangor menteri besar, and remained in Parliament as an independent member.
Bandar Tun Razak and Wangsa Maju were formerly held by MCA, before the Chinese-based party lost to PKR in 2008.
Yesterday, a group of Chinese residents in Wangsa Maju urged BN to field Umno division chief Shafie Abdullah as the candidate.
The residents said that they would vote for the opposition instead, if BN chose to field an MCA candidate.
MCA vetaran and Wangsa Maju chief Yew Teong Look refused to comment on the residents’ protest.
