KUALA LUMPUR:
An activist who got into a scuffle with police while trying to highlight the plight of Kepong longhouse residents outside Parliament claimed trial at the Magistrate’s Court today over the incident.

Mikhael Iskandar, who is a representative for Jinjang Utara longhouse residents, was charged under Section 186 of the Penal Code for allegedly obstructing Supt Mohamed Rafiq Mohamed Mustafa from discharging his duties.

Rafiq is also the deputy chief of the Sentul police district.

If found guilty, Mikhael faces a maximum jail term of two years, RM10,000 fine or both.

Magistrate Maizatul Munirah Abdul Rahman granted Mikhael, who is also a PKR member, bail of RM6,000 and set May 21 as the next mention date.

She also ordered him to report to a police station every month pending the disposal of his case.

Last Thursday, Mikhael was arrested by the police after he and 25 longhouse residents gathered outside the Parliament building for a press conference to highlight the residents’ living conditions.

The press conference came to an abrupt halt when Mikhael was told to move away from the Parliament gates.

He refused and was detained after a brief shouting match with the policemen. Several residents had also attempted to free him from the police, who had pinned him to the ground.
