KUALA LUMPUR:
MCA president Liow Tiong Lai has accused the DAP of not having principle for having agreed to give its rocket symbol a rest and using PKR’s instead.

Liow said DAP was trying to gain the Malay votes by having its candidates contest the general election under PKR’s logo.

“This (the rocket) is the symbol they (DAP) have been using for over 50 years and they are willing to pull the rocket down for all their parliamentary and state seats,” he told a crowd of 3,000 MCA delegates attending the launch of the MCA manifesto at Wisma MCA here today.

“So the saying of ‘Mahathir returns and rocket is gone’ comes true,” Liow said, referring to DAP’s working relationship with Pakatan Harapan chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad who announced on Friday that candidates of all PH component parties — DAP, Amanah, PPBM and PKR — would contest under the PKR banner in the election.

Liow said after the launch that the MCA had been working hard to get recognition of the Chinese independent schools’ Unified Examination Certificate.

Liow said it would take time to get others to understand the purpose of Chinese education and the UEC.

“This is a multiracial society and we need to ensure all parties feel that they are being taken care of. After they understand that multistream education is good for the country, then they will support,” he said.

Yesterday, Prime Minister and Barisan Nasional chairman Najib Razak announced that UEC holders can enter public universities as STPM and SPM holders.

Currently, only Sarawak and Selangor recognise the UEC for admission to state-owned learning institutions.

United Chinese School Committees’ Association of Malaysia (Dong Zong) chairman Vincent Lau previously said Malaysia would lose out for not recognising the UEC as good talent would look for opportunities
elsewhere.
