GEORGE TOWN:
Ten new faces are among those nominated for selection as Penang DAP’s election candidates, state chairman Chow Kon Yeow said today. He said the state committee had interviewed all those listed.

“The state committee set up a smaller committee to evaluate and filter all the candidates put forth by the different divisions. This committee has shortlisted the potential candidates to represent Penang DAP,” he said in a speech at the opening of an election operation centre at Datuk Keramat.

Present were DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and state assemblymen Jagdeep Singh Deo, RSN Rayer and Law Heng Kiang.

Chow hoped that the party would be able to field candidates who are qualified enough or had proven their capabilities.

On whether Jagdeep’s name was on the list, Chow said by default the names of serving assembly members had been shortlisted but it was up to the central leadership to decide whether to field them as candidates.

Last month Pakatan Harapan chief secretary Saifuddin Abdullah announced that there would be no changes to the state seats to be contested by the Penang DAP, which holds 19 seats in the state assembly.

The 19 seats: Sungai Puyu, Bagan Jermal, Bagan Dalam, Berapit, Padang Lallang, Perai, Jawi, Tanjung Bungah, Air Putih, Pulau Tikus, Padang Kota, Komtar, Pengkalan Kota, Datuk Keramat, Sungai Pinang, Batu Lanchang, Seri Delima, Air Itam and Paya Terubong.
