Time to focus on GE14, not to answer accusations, says Leiking

Warisan doesn't want to bicker with other opposition parties, he says.

KOTA KINABALU:
Parti Warisan Sabah deputy president Darell Leiking said his party would now focus on the 14th general election and strengthen its political pact rather than respond to accusations thrown against it.

Leiking was asked to comment on repeated statements by Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS) president Wilfred Bumburing that Warisan was greedy for seats in GE14.

Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) Backbenchers Club chairman Rahim Ismail, meanwhile, had questioned Warisan’s sincerity in cooperating with DAP and PKR.

Both were commenting on Warisan president Shafie Apdal’s statement Monday that his party had finalised its seat distribution arrangement with the Pakatan Harapan (PH) components.

“Warisan will now focus on preparing for the election and strengthening its pact with DAP and PKR,” Leiking told FMT.

“We’re not going to comment on what PCS and Rahim said about our party.

“I haven’t even bothered reading news reports on their accusations thrown against us.

“The time for all that is over. We’ll now focus on the most important things.”

Bumburing had said Warisan and other local opposition parties should come up with a better seat allocation agreement than the deal reached by Barisan Nasional component parties.

The number of seats Warisan wants is even more than what Umno is now holding, which is 31 seats out of 60.

“I have reliable information Warisan wants 42, which is 72%,” Bumburing had said.

“Even within PH, in the peninsula, the component parties get between 15% and 32% of the seats each, nothing more than that.

“No one party there monopolises the seats but the formula Warisan is proposing is worse than BN’s formula and proposes no positive change that would woo the voters.”

Rahim, meanwhile, had said Warisan is the local proxy of PPBM and the DAP and PKR should be wary of it.

He said Warisan was just interested in monopolising the state seats — in chasing party president Shafie Apdal’s “pipe dream” of becoming chief minister — at the expense of other opposition partners, such as DAP and PKR.

“I would be cautious if I were DAP and PKR. The pact between Warisan and Pakatan Harapan (PH), especially PPBM, is a dubious one.

“There’s no sincerity in the struggle. It is a means to an end.”

Shafie announced the “done deal” with PKR and DAP during a press conference after the party’s annual general meeting here.

The former federal minister and Umno vice-president, however, declined to give details on the seat distribution deal, saying it will be announced later.
