The Penang chief minister says in the past the opposition failed to get justice despite being victimised.

“We are not challenging or doubting the capabilities of the courts. Our criticism is directed towards the public prosecutor,” he said during a press conference held at the Dewan Rakyat media centre today.

The anti-fake news bill was passed yesterday by the Dewan Rakyat by 123 votes in favour and 64 against.

PAS MPs surprised the opposition by voting with Barisan Nasional (BN) for the bill, along with independent Bandar Tun Razak MP Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

Lim cited the case of his son who was accused of molesting a girl alleged to be studying with him in the same class in 2010 to support his claim of selective prosecution.

“I was advised to lodge a police report in 2012 so that the public prosecutor could take action against the irresponsible party.

“A false accusation on my 16-year-old son. The girl was actually from Hong Kong, and had never been to Penang.”

However, Lim pointed out, no action was taken on the case.

He further said no action was taken against Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor for waving the Umno flag in a school in October last year.

DAP Ipoh Barat MP M Kulasegaran said Pakatan Harapan would revoke harsh laws like the anti-fake news law if it took over Putrajaya in the coming general election.

Lim said it came as a surprise when PAS MPs supported the bill in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

“We expected them to oppose the bill as it goes against human rights.

“Are they an opposition party or (part of) the ruling party? The picture given is that they are part of BN,” he added.
