PETALING JAYA:
A Malaysian man who allegedly tried to enter Australia with more than 900 images and videos of child porn was arrested by border authorities and faces a maximum fine of A$180,000 (RM543,470), ten years in prison or both.

According to Australian daily The Age, the 27-year-old had flown into the country from Kuala Lumpur and was arrested at Melbourne International Airport on March 22.

Australian Border Force (ABF) officers found the material on his laptop computer and mobile phone while searching his luggage.

The man, who was remanded in Melbourne’s Magistrate’s Court the following day, has been charged with importing child exploitation material.

He will remain on remand until June 29.

“Children are harmed by those who manufacture this abhorrent material, and people who consume child exploitation material provide the market that fuels this vile trade.

“Through the use of intelligence and targeting techniques our trained officers actively look for people bringing child exploitation material into Australia,” ABF Commander Investigations Mark Antill was quoted as saying.
