Muhyiddin: I have no knowledge of Cambridge Analytica

The former deputy PM says he is hearing for the first time about the company which claims it helped Prime Minister Najib Razak win GE13.

KUALA LUMPUR: Former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin said he has no knowledge of Cambridge Analytica, a big data company which admitted playing a role in the Kedah state election during the 2013 general election.

“No knowledge at all. This is the first time I am hearing (about the company).

“Najib (Razak) does everything by himself,” said Muhyiddin after a Pakatan Harapan (PH) presidential council meeting today at the Parliament building.

Muhyiddin was appointed as Prime Minister Najib Razak’s number 2 in 2009. He was sacked from the position in 2015.

He is now PH deputy president and president of PPBM which is a component party of the opposition grouping that also includes PKR, DAP and Amanah.

During the press conference, PH chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad was also asked on the big data company.

He said there was no record of Cambridge Analytica operations in Kedah.

“It is central government. Kedah never had outside interference,” he added.

Cambridge Analytica, which reportedly played a key role in US President Donald Trump’s 2016 election victory, had admitted to conducting operations in Malaysia.

Wan Saiful Wan Jan, the deputy chairman of strategy and policy of PPBM, has called on Najib to explain if he used Cambridge Analytica to manipulate voters in GE13.

He also asked in a statement whether Najib was still using unethical manipulation techniques in the 14th general election.

The company has sold itself as the ultimate hi-tech consultant that can win votes by using data to pinpoint target groups and design messages that will appeal powerfully to their interest.
