The Amanah president, who is better known as Mat Sabu, was among 40 possible candidates and representatives from Amanah and PKR who attended the asset declaration session.
In his declaration, Mat Sabu listed RM105,000 as the amount of money he currently possessed, including a fixed deposit account.
He also owns five properties, including the house he currently resides in which is owned by his wife Normah Alwi, as well as a house in Sepang which is valued at RM300,000 for which he still owes the bank RM70,000.
All in, Mat Sabu and his wife own property valued at RM758,000, including two plots of land in rural Penang and Perak.
Mat Sabu also has some RM220,000 in current market value of unit trusts and insurance, although his Tabung Haji account balance is a mere RM600.
Another Amanah leader, Sepang MP Hanipa Maidin, said he only had RM900 in his bank account.
The former PAS lawyer has two homes valued at a total of RM1 million.
Amanah Youth deputy chief Faiz Fadzil has assets valued at RM641,000 nett and a law firm valued at RM115,000.
Last night, Invoke founder Rafizi Ramli said some representatives did not want to declare their assets, either because they were ashamed or they were worried.
“There are those who are poor and are shy because they only have RM1,000, while there are those who are afraid that if they declare so much then people will ask for money,” he quipped.
Independent candidate and Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar, who left PAS earlier this year, was also present at the session.
Rafizi said his people had already met with PH’s four leaders to explain the importance of the asset declaration.
He said DAP had told Invoke that the party was not interested in declaring its assets through the body as it was not contesting in mixed seats.
“I have no legal right to force anyone,” he added. “This is merely a proactive way to instil the culture of declaring assets.
“DAP and other PKR leaders feel they don’t need Invoke’s services because they feel the seats they are contesting will not pose any problems.”
PPBM representatives likewise did not declare their assets through Invoke.
“They said they need to go home and think about it,” Rafizi said.
As a gesture of gratitude to those who had declared their assets last night, he said Invoke would help them campaign in the coming general election.
He added that it was difficult to convince candidates to declare their assets.
“It takes time to convince them. That’s why we need to start first with as many as we can. We need to create the demand for asset declaration to become voluntary,” he said.
