Fishermen and tugboat owners, especially those operating in the high-risk Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone), had previously been advised to install the system for security purposes.
With the AIS, Esscom could better monitor fishing boats in the event of an emergency, Hazani said after a dialogue session with those involved in the fishing industry in Sandakan today.
There are 185 fishing boats in Sandakan now but the system has only been installed on 33 of them while 69 others are equipped with the in-vessel monitoring system.
Hazani also urged the fishing community to continue being Esscom’s eyes and ears to report suspicious activities in Sabah’s waters.
