Speaking to FMT, Fauzi also attributed intelligence to voters in the Kuantan parliamentary constituency, which lies next to Indera Mahkota. Both are largely urban areas inside the Kuantan administrative district.
Fauzi, who is Pahang PKR chief, said he was well acquainted with the democratic beliefs of voters in the two areas. Most of them believed in the two-party system, he added.
“If A is not performing, they will vote for B and vice versa, and that’s what a mature democracy is all about,” he said.
“Whomever you put in Indera Mahkota or Kuantan, Pakatan will still win. They are town voters, they are thinking voters, and they want change.”
Indera Mahkota and Kuantan were the only two parliamentary seats in Pahang that PKR won in the last election. PKR placed Fauzi in Indera Mahkota because Azan Ismail, who had won the seat for the party in GE12, had left for Terengganu, citing dissatisfaction with Pahang PKR’s management.
In GE13, Azan won the Bandar state seat in Terengganu for PKR, defeating the incumbent, Barisan Nasional’s Toh Chin Yaw.
In Indera Mahkota, Fauzi got 5% more votes than Azan did in GE12.
The current occupant of the Kuantan seat is Fuziah Salleh, who first won it for PKR in GE12, when she beat the incumbent, Fu Ah Kiow of BN.
