GEORGE TOWN: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) arrested a 50-year-old director of a consultant engineering firm yesterday for allegedly influencing a federal government-linked housing developer to use his company’s services.

A highly placed source said the director had influenced a “certain individual” in JKP Sdn Bhd (JKP), a fully-owned company of the Finance Minister Incorporated, and made about RM3 million over a span of 11 years.

It was learnt that the engineering firm had presented itself as a civil and structural consultant engineer for JKP’s projects despite one of JKP’s key people having a “conflict of interest” with the firm.

“The man was believed to have influenced a certain individual to use his company, despite knowing that particular individual had vested interests in the company as well,” the source said without elaborating.

The director was arrested while giving his statement at the Penang MACC headquarters at Northam Road here at 1pm yesterday.

The Magistrate’s Court has granted a five-day remand for the director from today until March 5.

The case is believed to be related to a complaint lodged by PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail who claimed that checks showed the engineering firm had earned RM3.06 million from being involved in the projects.

When contacted, Penang MACC chief Abd Aziz Aban confirmed the arrest and said the case was being investigated.
