The remand order was issued by Magistrate Norhidayati Mohammad Nasroh following an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
The 37-year-old businessman was detained by MACC at 3.48pm yesterday when he went to give his statement at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya.
According to a MACC source, the businessman, whose wife is a leader of an NGO, was believed to have received the money from the main contractor to “close” MACC’s investigation into the project.
He was alleged to have received the payment in stages between July and August last year.
The mega project has been bogged by controversies, including claims of high cost of feasibility studies as well as payment using state government land.
It has also been met with protest from parts of the local community due to concerns over its economic, social and environmental impact.
