MELAKA:
A police station chief in Melaka was arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for demanding a bribe of RM6,000 for the release of an individual arrested for drug offences yesterday.

Melaka MACC director Abu Talib Othman said the 53-year-old police sergeant was arrested based on a public complaint at the Tanjung Kling police station here about 5.30pm.

“The policeman is still being detained to assist in the investigation into the case until its completion and the remand would depend on the course of the investigation.

“Investigations will also involve whether the requested transaction took place or not,” he told reporters after the launch of the Melaka-level Small Anti-Corruption Revolution Movement (Gerah) Friends Programme at Sekolah Kebangsaan Telok Mas here today.

He said members for this programme will be drawn from 237 primary school students in the state.

It is aimed at instilling understanding of corruption and its impact on individuals and the country.

“This group of young people will lead the nation in the future and it is important for us to instil a hatred for corrupt practices early in their lives,” he said.
