Judge Mohd Haldar Abdul Aziz handed down the sentence on Mohd Izzwan Jamaluddin, 35, after finding that the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubts against the prosecution’s case.
Haldar sentenced Izzwan, who was then with the narcotics division of the Hulu Terengganu district police headquarters, to three years’ jail on each count, to be served concurrently from today.
Izzwan was also fined RM25,000, in default 12 months’ jail, on the first charge with accepting RM5,000 from one Syahrull Sharahudeen, who was detained for an alleged drug case, as an inducement for action not to be taken against him.
The offence was committed at 6.25pm behind the KFC Restaurant, Kuala Berang, on Aug 20, 2015.
He was also fined RM100,000, in default 24 months’ jail, for the second offence with soliciting RM20,000 from Syahrull for the same purpose at 8pm at a house in Kampung Durian Kassim, Ajil, on Aug 15, 2015.
Izzwan, who has been suspended from work, and earns a living as a night market trader, failed to pay the fine and was sent to Marang Prison.
He was represented by lawyer Amirul Ridzuan Hanif, while deputy public prosecutor from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, Mohamad Fadhly Mohd Zamry, prosecuted.
