GEORGE TOWN: The four corporals who received RM250 each from Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng for shovelling mounds of sand from an overturned lorry on the Penang Bridge to clear traffic have donated them to the police welfare fund.

State police chief Commissioner A Thaiveegan said traffic corporals Azidin Ahmad, Mohd Nazri Zainal Abidin, Mohd Zain Mohamed Nor and Noor Ridzwan Mat  donated RM1,000 to the Royal Malaysian Police Welfare Fund.

“They felt the money could be used by their fellow police officers who are in need or who are hospitalised. I am proud of them,” Thaiveegan said when contacted.

On Tuesday, the corporals took the initiative to free up two of the three lanes on the bridge, which were blocked by sand from a crashed lorry. The accident caused a massive mid-day traffic jam.

The driver of the lorry was reported to have lost control after the rear tyre exploded. No one was hurt in the incident.

The corporals, who arrived on the scene soon after, shovelled the sand to clear the bridge. Their action was recorded by motorists.

Lim was impressed by their act and gave them RM250 and a certificate of appreciation from the Penang government.
