State party chairman Azman Ismail said he welcomes projects which are meant for the good of the people, but believes that the PM’s promises raise many questions as well.
“Is this one of the candies in light of upcoming 14th general election? As GE14 draws closer, Umno-Barisan Nasional is announcing such allocations for the people.
“Malaysians must remember that the Umno-BN government is only good at making such promises to the people,” he said in a statement today.
Azman’s statement was in response to Najib’s recent announcement of projects involving the construction of an annex building for the Langkawi Hospital, worth RM500 million; new quarters for health workers (RM135 million); a Fire and Rescue Department facility as well as new quarters at Padang Matsirat (RM30 million); upgrading of the Jalan Bulatan Lapangan Terbang-Pulapol Langkawi (RM50 million); and projects to tackle water supply problems (RM600 million).
Azman, who is also Kuala Kedah MP, said former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had once served as a medical officer in Langkawi in 1955 and never lost his special bond with Langkawi.
As a matter of fact, Azman said it was as a result of Mahathir’s attention to Langkawi that the island was developed and made into a duty-free island in 1987, with the Langkawi Development Authority also set up.
“I would like to remind Najib and the Umno-BN federal government not to try and give false hopes to the people. Every single election, they use the same tactic to try and win over the people.
“I hope that the Umno-BN federal government does not repeat promises it cannot keep, such as resolving the issue of proper water supply in Kedah,” he said.
