KOTA BHARU: The opposition’s allegations that China’s investments in Malaysia will have a negative impact on the country are meant to incite anger towards the government, said International Trade and Industry Minister Mustapa Mohamed.

“We know leaders like (Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed) Azmin Ali and (Penang Chief Minister) Lim Guan Eng travel to China to attract investors there even though it contradicts what their top leaders say.

“This clearly shows that they are not consistent, and the allegations are intended to stoke the public’s anger,” he told reporters after visiting several Chinese families here on Chinese New Year day today.

Yesterday, Azmin was reported as saying investments from China must be welcomed as they benefit the country, a statement seen as contradicting the views of Pakatan Harapan Chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad who has been a vocal critic of foreign direct investment from China.

Mustapa, who is also Kelantan Umno chairman, said Azmin’s statement clearly showed that the federal government led by the Barisan Nasional (BN) had been on the right track all along.

“The reality is that there are many more countries which invest in this country, such as the United States, Korea, Japan and Germany. China is just one of the countries which have come here to invest.

“Malaysians must choose a government that is consistent in carrying out short-term, medium and long-term policies which will benefit them in the future,” he said.
