The video wars started when DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang said on Feb 14 that his son Lim Guan Eng’s Chinese New Year video had garnered more views than that released by MCA president Liow Tiong Lai. A day later, he rubbed salt into the wound by saying even DAP MP Teresa Kok’s video had received more views than that of the MCA.
Lim had said the eyeballs for the videos released by the political parties showed the support they had from the public and that unlike MCA’s election results, which would only be known on polling day, the support for its festive videos was evidence of DAP’s support.
Today, MCA deputy president Wee Ka Siong hit back at Lim saying the party’s Chinese New Year video was not for getting an Oscar or a Grammy but to highlight family values and the importance of the reunion dinner.
“We are not here to aim for Grammy or Oscar awards,” he told reporters after a national Chinese New Year celebration at Wisma MCA, here.
Lim was reported as saying yesterday that the videos featuring Liow, Wee MCA secretary-general Ong Ka Chuan as well as the entire MCA national leadership were unable to garner the viewership of DAP deputy secretary-general and Seputeh MP Teresa Kok’s video.
He had earlier said the Chinese New Year video uploaded by Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng had outdone the MCA video.
At the time of writing, Kok’s video on YouTube had garnered 86,632 views since it was posted on Feb 13, while the MCA video on Facebook, also posted on Feb 13, had received 61,000 views.
Lim Guan Eng’s video, which was uploaded on Feb 11, has had 459,000 views.
Saying the MCA’s video was to promote family unity while having a proper meal, Wee added: “This is a tradition for the families. to treasure these moments. We are duty bound to go and visit our parents and not just come back for the election.”
Wee, a three-term MP for Ayer Hitam, also said he would be defending his seat. “I have done alot of things here (Ayer Hitam). So, I’m offering to contest here again,” he added.
