LANGKAWI:
The promotion of Langkawi moved to “hyperdrive in space”, when the popular Malaysian island was mentioned in the latest American science fiction television series, Star Trek: Discovery.

Captain Philippa Georgiou, a character from the sci-fi series played by Michelle Yeoh, is fast becoming a household name in Langkawi for claiming in the latest episode that she came from the island.

Yeoh’s character’s mention of Langkawi in the scene has stirred much excitement among the islanders.

The clip has gone viral on social media, with Georgiou first saying she is from Malaysia.

The shout-out, even though brief, came as a good promotion for the island, said Langkawi Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Organisation (Usahabumi) secretary Ahmad Phisol Ishak.

“It is really excellent and appreciated so that more and more tourists will come,” he told Bernama.

For 54-year-old local tourism player Ilias Ismail, the dialogue mentioning Langkawi in the particular episode gave him a sense of satisfaction, considering the popularity of Star Trek and Yeoh being an international superstar.

“We have been enjoying visits by tourists from Russia, United Kingdom and China (to name a few).

“With this introduction by Michelle Yeoh, Langkawi could become even more famous,” he said.

Other than being a destination of choice for tourists around the world, the naturally-beautiful Langkawi has been a preferred location for film-makers and television series producers from within and outside Malaysia.
