KUCHING: The senior citizen population in Malaysia is expected to reach 5.6 million by 2030.

Deputy Health Minister Dr Hilmi Yahya attributed the higher life expectancy of the ageing population to advancements in healthcare, comparing this with the facilities available 50 years ago.

“Malaysians are living longer. So it won’t be surprising if the demand for nursing homes increases,” he told a special press conference after visiting the Eden-on-the-Park nursing care residence here yesterday.

He said the government must be prepared to build more such residences.

“Eden-on-the-Park is a good example of an inclusive healthcare residence which offers comprehensive medical and daily care.

“It not only offers intensive care services but also a safe, calm and peaceful environment for the elderly to fill their time with healthy activities.”

Eden-on-the-Park is a premium nursing home which offers long and short-term residence as well as rehabilitation for the elderly.

The residence, which has 71 rooms, is equipped with a 24-hour nursing system, staffed by trained caregivers and nurses, and offers quality nutritional care, home care, laundry services and social activities.
