PETALING JAYA: The health ministry has launched an investigation into an instant coffee product after at least two individuals were reported to have fallen ill and warded at the Penang Hospital after consuming it.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said a public announcement would be made on the matter as soon as the department received a confirmation on the case.

“Members of the public are advised to always be cautious about the cleanliness and quality of food and drinks that they take, and immediately seek treatment at any health facility if they suffer any symptoms of illness,” he said in a statement today.

He said the ministry learnt about the news after it went viral on social media.

Earlier, Bernama reported that two men had ended up at the hospital recently after they drank the coffee which left them severely fatigued.

It cited hospital director Dr Wan Mansor Hamzah as saying the duo were still receiving treatment and were in stable condition.

“They were admitted to the emergency unit in a very weak state and complained that it was the result of the instant coffee they had consumed.

“We are investigating deeper into the matter and conducting various tests including blood tests to find out what exactly happened,” he said.

Wan Mansor said the hospital would also be getting samples of the coffee for analysis to find out if indeed that particular type of coffee was the cause.
