SEA Games female taekwondo athlete charged with hurting guard

She pleads not guilty to voluntarily causing hurt to a safety officer at Putra Heights LRT station.

PETALING JAYA: A female taekwondo national athlete was charged in the Magistrate’s Court here today with voluntarily causing hurt to a safety officer at a light rail transit (LRT) station last year.

Nur Dhia Liyana Shaharuddin, 24, claimed trial to committing the offence on Placid P Rodriguez, 69, at the Putra LRT station, Persiaran Putra Indah, Putra Heights, here at 6.40pm on July 6, 2017.

The athlete, who won a silver medal at the SEA Games 2017, was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum one-year imprisonment or a fine of up to RM2,000 on conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Abu Arsalnaa Zainal Abidin proposed RM5,000 as bail in one surety but the accused, who was unrepresented, pleaded for a lower sum.

Magistrate Nur Shahirah Abdul Salim set RM2,500 as bail in one surety and fixed Feb 26 for remention of the case.
