Judge Shamsudin Abdullah handed down the sentence on Aminah Sulaiman, 26.
Today was supposed to be the first day of her trial but she changed her plea to guilty today.
She was sentenced to five years’ jail for robbery and three years for abduction, to be served concurrently from the date of her arrest on Sept 11, 2017.
On the robbery charge, Aminah was charged under Section 394 of the Penal Code with voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery on a person with a disability (OKU), Zaiton Beevi Mohamad Anwar, 62, who lost a pair of gold earrings, two gold bangles and a gold necklace in the incident.
The law provides an imprisonment of up to 20 years and a fine for the offence.
Aminah, who has two children, was also charged with kidnapping Zaiton at the 3rd floor car park of Klinik Pakar Harian Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL), Jalan Pahang here, at 1.30pm on Sept 11 last year.
In mitigation, Aminah, represented by lawyer Latheefa Koya, said she had two young children, a father, who is an OKU, and a mother, who is a housewife, to take care off.
“She committed the offences because she was desperate and having financial problems,” said Latheefa.
Deputy public prosecutor Nurakmal Farhan Aziz prosecuted.
According to the facts of the case, Zaiton was brought to the hospital by her husband. After the treatment, he had left her at the waiting area in front of the hospital to get her medication at the pharmacy unit.
It was then that Aminah approached Zaiton and pushed the woman, who was in a wheelchair, to the third floor of the car park and then into a Proton Wira car before leaving the hospital ground.
In the car, Aminah ripped the woman of her jewellery, causing the senior citizen to suffer soft tissue injury.
After robbing Zaiton of her jewellery, Aminah left the woman at a bus stop in Jalan Seputeh, Brickfields.
She was arrested the same day.
