Mahathirism is well and alive in the opposition, says PBS

KOTA KINABALU: Pakatan Harapan’s decision to name former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the PM candidate shows Mahathirism is well and alive in the opposition, said Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS).

PBS secretary-general Johnny Mositun told FMT that PH’s decision gave the impression that at least for them, politics is about keeping a family’s dynasty intact instead of giving opportunity to more qualified leaders.

“All I can say is, I pity former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

“He went against Prime Minister Najib Razak because he believed Mahathir would back him up to become the next prime minister.

“Speculation about who should be prime minister has been going on for quite some time but Muhyiddin’s name was never mentioned or considered.

“It was either PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim or Mahathir. The opposition has renewed its manifesto so many times but the only thing that remains consistent is to free Anwar.”

He wondered if the people inside PKR and the opposition as a whole have actually forgotten who put Anwar behind bars in the first place and who fired him as the deputy PM and from all his posts within Umno.

Earlier, PH chief secretary Saifuddin Abdullah announced Mahathir as the opposition’s PM candidate during the coalition’s convention on Sunday.

Saifuddin also announced PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as PH’s deputy PM candidate.
