2 charged with obstructing police at Zunar fundraiser

Police claim they tried to stop an officer from conducting checks on the cartoonist’s books put on display.

Two people were charged in separate Magistrate’s Courts here today with obstructing a policeman carrying out his duty during a raid at cartoonist’s Zunar’s fundraising event about a year ago.

Freelancer Toong Ah Tea and activist Wong Chee Wai claimed trial to the same charge under Section 186 of the Penal Code for allegedly stopping DSP Gunalan Muniandy from conducting checks on books exhibited at the event.

They were said to have committed the offence at the Kuala Lumpur Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH) here on Dec 17, 2016.

If found guilty, they face a maximum jail term of two years, or RM10,000 fine or both.

Magistrate Radziah Kamarudin allowed Toong to be bailed for RM5,000 while Magistrate Mahyuddin Mohamad Som granted Wong bail of RM1,000.

The next mention dates were fixed on Feb 7 and 8 for Wong and Toong, respectively.

In December 2016, it was reported that Zunar and several guests were arrested by police during a “Tea with Zunar” fundraising event at KLSCAH.

Police seized 1,187 books and 103 t-shirts during the event.

Zunar sued last year for damages for alleged wrongful arrest and false imprisonment.

He is also seeking special damages of RM22,388 as the cost of the seized books and t-shirts, as well as a court declaration that the police had violated his constitutional rights.
