Perbadanan Bukit Bendera Pulau Pinang (PBBPP) general manager Cheok Lay Leng said the funicular train service was temporarily halted since Nov 5 after the area was classified as a “Red Zone” due to the occurrence of landslides and falling trees.
He said this at a ceremony to announce the resumption of the train service’s operations, launched by Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng today.
Cheok thanked various quarters, including federal agencies and voluntary organisations, that had helped with cleaning and restoration work at Bukit Bendera.
Meanwhile, Lim expressed his gratitude to PBBPP for its dedication, commitment and extraordinary efforts to restore Bukit Bendera so that the cable train could be operational again.
The Bukit Bendera cable train service was halted for a month to facilitate repair and restoration work from the damage caused by extreme weather conditions in Penang last month.
A total of 194 landslides were reported in Bukit Bendera that not only disrupted the cable train service, but also blocked access roads going up the hill.
