Located on Jalan Ampang, near the junction with Jalan Tun Razak, the mall opened with much fanfare in 1973. It was especially popular with the affluent and families of diplomats and other foreigners living in Ampang and along Jalan Tun Razak and Jalan Ampang.
The success of Ampang Park also paved the way for other malls, which still stand today, which were opened in the 1970s, including Pertama Complex on Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman in 1976 and Sungei Wang Plaza at the junction of Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan Bukit Bintang in 1977.
On June 1, the legal action taken by Ampang Park business owners to challenge the acquisition of land for the Ampang Park MRT station finally came to an end.
The Federal Court dismissed the application of the 39 strata owners and tenants to obtain leave to appeal against the dismissal of their judicial review by the High Court and Court of Appeal last year.
The business owners and tenants started their legal fight on Jan 8 last year, filing a judicial review application, naming the Federal Territories ministry, government, director of Land and Mines and the Land Administrator of the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur as respondents.
However, the group later dropped the Federal Territories ministry and the government as respondents in the judicial review application.
They had sought a declaration that the Form D, dated Aug 17, 2015, and Form E, dated Oct 22, 2015, under the Land Acquisition Act 1960 issued by the respondents were unconstitutional, illegal, null and void.
However, on June 30 last year, the KL High Court dismissed the application for a judicial review, ruling that the approval given by the FT Land and Mines director (first respondent) and the FT land administrator (second respondent) for the land acquisition was made according to stipulated laws.
Judge Hanipah Farikullah said he agreed with the submission by Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp), which was named the third respondent, that the objective of the land acquisition was for safety.
He added that the land acquisition by the government was lawful and intended to make the project more efficient.
According to MRT Corp, the Ampang Park MRT station is an important station for the MRT Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya Line because it is the only station where commuters can transfer from the MRT line to the Kelana Jaya LRT line.
