I forgive Zairil, says DAP rep accused of slacking in his work

Maverick politician also calls Penang CM and Zairil to contest in Tanjung Bungah or Kebun Bunga — 'if they are so good'.

GEORGE TOWN:
Amid claims of being “out of reach” and being “not responsive”, DAP’s Tanjung Bungah assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu has come out to say he was doing an honest job and was an “always available” wakil rakyat.

The two-term assemblyman said his voters and the people of Tanjung Bungah were the witnesses of his work and his conscience was “clear”.

In an interview with FMT, Teh also told the Penang chief minister and Bukit Bendera MP Zairil Khir Johari to put their money where their mouth is, telling them to contest in Tanjung Bungah “if they think they are so good”.

The maverick political personality said he had forgiven Zairil for making disparaging claims against him recently.

“I understand he (Zairil) is under pressure by his boss to make such statements. It is okay, I forgive him.

“The people of Tanjung Bungah know that I have done work for them and they are the best judge of my performance.

“I am also always available. You can ask around. I have been responding to many things, community events and more.”

Teh’s remarks come after Zairil revealed Teh would be barred from approving the RM700 aid for last month’s flood victims to his constituents. The aid was supposed to be approved by the respective state assemblypersons.

Teh’s aid-approving duties were taken over by Zairil.

Zairil had said Teh was relieved of his duties as he was “not responsive” and due to his “hostile stance against the PH government”.

Teh’s vow to quit DAP at the end of this term and “contest against DAP or Pakatan Harapan” were also reasons considered before the decision was made, Zairil had said.

“For the past year, he has slowed down and has become very low profile. He has not been very active.

“A lot of people have tried contacting him and have complained to me, including the JKKK (village security and development committee) chairman.

“In the recent tragedies, such as the landslide in Tanjung Bungah and the recent floods, he was not on the ground, not like before.

“Before, YB Teh was quick and always on the ground. But he has been less active lately,” Zairil had said.

Teh denies saying he would contest against DAP

Teh said Zairil’s claims were false and said he was the first person to arrive at the Tanjung Bungah tragedy site, which saw 11 construction workers being buried alive in a landslide at a housing construction site in October.

He recalled calling an executive councillor to immediately come to the site and also gave an interview with local TV newsmen who had first responded to the incident.

On claims he would “contest against DAP”, Teh said that was also false as he has no intentions to do so.

“I never said that before. I said I would leave the party once the state assembly is dissolved.

“I never said I will go out and contest against DAP. And I have also said, I will never join BN or PH.

“I might retire or likely be an activist … I have yet to decide on this,” he said.

Teh had announced his decision to leave DAP following the Tanjung Bungah incident. This was the second time he had said he wanted to leave the party, after indicating so at a state assembly session.

Teh said these false claims were a character assassination by those who perceived him as a threat.

“I think they (DAP) feel they ought to kill those seen as a threat.

“I say, if Zairil thinks he is so good, come and contest in Tanjung Bungah lah.

“After all Tanjung Bungah is open already; I am clearly out of the picture.

“Better yet, the chief minister can choose to contest in Tanjung Bungah or Kebun Bunga because he does not like us expressing our views at the dewan (state assembly)” Teh said.

Teh was referring to PKR’s Kebun Bunga assemblyman Cheah Kah Peng, who had also suffered a similar fate as him.

Cheah was also relieved of giving aid to flood victims due to an “internal procedural change”. His job was handed over to Pulau Tikus assemblywoman Yap Soo Huey.
