She has no locus standi, says the deputy minister.

PETALING JAYA: Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed today slammed US lawyer Kimberly Motley for questioning the country’s prison regulations, after she was denied a visit to opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim in prison.

“She is rude and arrogant,” Nur Jazlan told FMT.

“What locus standi does she have to criticise Malaysian laws and prison rules?” he asked.

This comes after the international human rights lawyer criticised Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for denying access to her client, Anwar Ibrahim.

“It is fundamental that a person is entitled to have access to legal advisers of his choice while in prison,” Motley said yesterday.

“The rejection of my request to meet Anwar is in breach of international standards of access to justice and paints Malaysia in a bad light.”

Motley has been representing Anwar since Sept 7 on a pro bono basis.

Anwar, 70, is currently serving his five-year jail sentence after a conviction for sodomy.
