KUALA LUMPUR: Whatever decisions made at the Umno general assembly is final and this includes the resolution for the post of president and deputy president to go uncontested at the next party polls.

In defending the motion that was passed yesterday, Umno president Najib Razak also said that it was in line with the party’s constitution.

“The highest decision making authority is the general assembly, there is no other. The assembly can also amend the party constitution if need be,” Najib, who is also the prime minister, said at a press conference following the close of the general assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre today.

He was asked to comment on what would happen if there were those who wanted to contest for the top two post, to which he said it would be invalidated.

The motion, which was proposed by Umno Youth, was unanimously passed yesterday.

This means that Najib Razak and vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is performing the duties of the deputy president, will continue leading the party.

It will also allow Zahid to be nominated as deputy president and win unchallenged.

On a related note, Najib said that party members could still contest for the vice-president’s post, but added that he hoped current vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein would get the highest votes.

“We will give him our full support.”

Najib also said he was satisfied with this year’s general assembly, saying that none of the delegates had shot themselves in the foot.
