PSM: Yes to talks with PH, but no to one-seat deal

Sungai Siput MP Dr Michael Jeyakumar says things can only be worked out with PH if it intends to include PSM in the opposition coalition.

KUALA LUMPUR: PSM has expressed its willingness to engage with Pakatan Harapan (PH) to iron out disagreements and cooperate in the 14th general election (GE14).

According to the party’s Sungai Siput MP Dr Michael Jeyakumar, things can only be worked out if PH intends to include PSM in the opposition coalition.

“So far, what they have told us is that I can have Sungai Siput if I contest on the PKR ticket, provided that no one else (from PSM) stands anywhere else.

“This exclusion includes party central committee member S Arulchelvan, secretary B Suresh who intends to stand in Cameron Highlands, and deputy chairperson M Saraswathy, which we can’t accept.

“If there is talk, perhaps there can be some give and take, but it cannot be one seat,” he said when met in Parliament here yesterday.

Jeyakumar said PSM would always champion the view of the grassroots.

“We feel that we have a different message to bring and a different view to bring to the table.

“Even if we contest on a PKR ticket and win the seat, we will still bring the PSM view to Parliament and state assemblies.

“We will bring the grassroots’ view to Pakatan Harapan.”

He added that some of the views brought by PSM might not sit well with PH.

“We will always look after the welfare of our people, which is why we were always against the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement because we were concerned that it would undermine the market.

“We need this kind of clarity from a ideology-based party who understands issues.”
