The 85-year-old former police officer died on Saturday morning while undergoing a routine dialysis treatment at a private hospital in George Town, Penang, reported the New Straits Times today.
Chung is survived by his wife Chee Sin Gan, 85, two sons, a daughter-in-law and two grandchildren.
His funeral will be held at 2pm on Wednesday and the cortege will leave from Block D, Mount Erskine Kwangtung and Tengchow Association funeral parlour for the Mount Erskine crematorium.
In an interview with NST last year, Chung recalled some of his fond memories while assigned to protect Tunku.
“I am grateful to Tunku for his words of wisdom that had enriched my life,” he was quoted as saying.
Chung also recalled how the “Father of Independence” had ridden in an open jeep to greet people during a Merdeka parade when he was the prime minister.
“The loud cheers from the people still ring in my ears until now,” he told NST then.
According to Chung, what impressed him most about Tunku was his down-to-earth attitude whenever he met people.
Chung served the former prime minister for 19 years, until Tunku’s death in 1990.
