KUANTAN:
A Vietnamese shipping agent today pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court to two counts of offering a RM350,000 bribe to Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) officers.

Tran Thi Mai, 41, who is also known as “Datuk Maimunah”, allegedly offered the kickback to a middleman, to be paid to MMEA officer Captain Amran Daud as inducement to release four Vietnamese fishing boats seized by the agency in Tanjung Sedili, Kota Tinggi, Johor.

She is reported to be married to a Malaysian.

On the first count, the mother of four is said to have given RM300,000 to middleman Muhammad Sani Abdullah to be paid to Amran.

The offence was allegedly committed in Hot Gossip Cafe at Park Royal Hotel here on May 2.

On the second count, she is accused of giving RM50,000 to Sani to be paid to Amran. The offence was allegedly committed at Restoran Starbuck Pearl Point Shopping Mall here on May 12.

If found guilty, Tran faces a maximum jail term of 20 years, and a fine five times the graft money, or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

The hearing before Madihah Harullah was adjourned to the afternoon to allow the accused to get a Malaysian bailor.

Last week, Tran was also charged in the Kuantan Sessions Court for giving RM800,000 as bribes to MMEA officers on Nov 5.

She allegedly offered the kickback to a middleman to be paid to Captain Nurul Hizam Zakaria and Amran as inducement to release nine Vietnamese fishing boats seized by the agency.

The offence was allegedly committed at a hotel coffee house in Kuantan.

Judge Dazuki Ali allowed RM100,000 bail with two Malaysian sureties, and ordered her to surrender her passport to the court.

He also ordered Tran to report to the Kuantan police station every month until the case is settled.

The case will be mentioned again on Dec 11.
