KUALA LUMPUR:
Former inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar was appointed non-executive chairman of Kumpulan Prasarana Malaysia Berhad because of his integrity, experience and capability, said Prime Minister Najib Razak.

“His leadership capability was proven throughout his career in the police force which he joined in 1976.

“The wide and deep knowledge Khalid has in the security field will be of help in beefing up the security of Prasarana’s public transport services,” he added in a written reply to the Dewan Rakyat today.

Najib was asked by Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud (Amanah-Kota Raja) to explain the qualifications and experience of Khalid in the public transport field.

Khalid was appointed chairman of Prasarana, which is wholly owned by the finance ministry, on Sept 5, one day after he stepped down as IGP on compulsory retirement.

He replaced Ismail Adam whose appointment expired on Aug 31.

Prasarana owns and operates public transport assets that include bus services in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Kuantan as well as the MRT, LRT and monorail network.

Khalid was also named as Special Envoy with responsibility to improve ties and cooperation with the international community in the fight against terrorism, extremist ideology and human trafficking.
