PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia recorded a 6.2% growth in gross domestic product (GDP) in the third quarter of this year, an achievement that proves that the country’s economic management is on track, said Najib Razak.

The prime minister and finance minister said the achievement made Malaysia one of the countries which recorded the highest economic growth in the world this year.

He said the achievement was in line with the demands of Islam, which always set the best and highest targets in all matters.

“As Muslims, we have to set the level of excellence that we have to achieve, thus making sure we have targets for whatever we do, such as the best, the highest, both of which mean excellence,” he said when opening the Mahmoodiah Surau in Precinct 18 here today.

Najib, who had earlier chaired the weekly meeting of the cabinet, joined the local residents at Friday prayers at the new surau that can accommodate 1,200 worshippers at any one time.

The prime minister said that while practising the principle of “wasatiyyah” (moderation) in the national administration, it was a must to set excellence as the benchmark.

Besides the economy, he said, the religious administration was also in a state of excellence and world-class, such as the Tabung Haji management in the handling of haj pilgrims.

“This is all thanks to us upholding the Maqasid Syariah, which always places importance on rights,” he said.

On the surau, Najib said he was impressed with the beauty of its design and described it as one of the most comfortable and beautiful surau he had ever visited.

The surau, construction of which began in April 2015 at a cost of RM4 million contributed by the Federal Territory Islamic Affairs Council (MAIWP), was first used for Friday prayers on May 26. It is located next to Sekolah Rendah Agama Mahmoodiah.
