Some Sabah leaders used as buffers for Umno’s race politics, claims Warisan

Warisan supreme council member Mazliwati Abdul Malek Chua says Sabahans are realising that Umno can only play politics of race and religion which is against the history and culture of Sabah.

KOTA KINABALU: Many Sabah leaders are allowing themselves and their parties to be used as the buffer zones for Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN), said Parti Warisan Sabah supreme council member Mazliwati Abdul Malik Chua.

She said Warisan was aware that Umno was the force behind all these local parties because they ride on the same campaign strategies of race and religion.

“They are the ones guilty of conniving with Umno to divide and rule Sabahans. Umno cannot thrive on multi-racialism because they survive on Malay-ism. So they make the others their exact duplicate.

“After they are successful in segregating them based on religion and race, they pit these groups against each other by playing racial and religious sentiments.

“Momogun (collective term for Sabah natives) leaders who know this and still play along are traitors to their own race,” she said.

Mazliwati was commenting on an article by Kiulu assemblyman Joniston Bangkuai on Monday who said that it was highly unlikely for the opposition in Sabah to wrest seats from BN in the coming general election.

Bangkuai, who is from Sabah BN member Parti Bersatu Sabah, pointed out that all the opposition parties were too busy quarrelling with one another while all lacked leaders of integrity.

Mazliwati, however, refuted the allegation and accused Bangkuai of living an illusion if he believed BN was still strong in Sabah.

“It is perfectly OK to try boosting their morale but it doesn’t change the reality.

“I feel that support towards Umno is at an all-time low since its inception in Sabah and, with each passing day, it is falling to a lower level.

“Sabahans are coming to realise that Umno and BN can only play politics of race and religion which is against the history and culture of Sabah which has always been a multicultural, multiracial and multi-belief society where people live together in peace and harmony,” she said.

Mazliwati, who is a lawyer, said most Sabahans despise BN because of the Umno leadership, policies and “the corruption which forms the core of Umno’s current leadership”.

She also accused Bangkuai of trying to be the prosecutor, judge and executioner in his statement against Warisan president Shafie Apdal who is under investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.

“It is not just funny but ridiculous to accuse a person of being guilty while still under investigation which many believe is politically motivated.

“Please take note that Shafie is not even tried nor found guilty yet. I urge Bangkuai to research before making any statement and give people like me extra work to do to reply, correct and teach,” she said.

She also told Bangkuai to ask his own leaders to respond to the people’s enquiries on 1MDB which is currently under investigation in seven different countries.
